Under the general direction of the Chief Deputy District Director, the Chief of Staff is a member of the District Executive Team and serves as the primary advisor and lead on behalf of the District Director and Chief Deputy District Director on matters pertaining to the strategic direction of the District.

The incumbent is a non-supervisory expert responsible for the high-level strategic program, planning and project management on behalf of the District 7 Director.

The incumbent resolves with the District Director and Chief Deputy District Director highly sensitive issues and policies that involve other transportation entities, local elected officials and the public.

The incumbent handles highly confidential and sensitive matters and works quickly and independently to conduct research, prepare responses and brief the District Director on a wide variety of statewide transportation-related policies and programs in District 7.

This position requires a high level of confidentiality that must be observed when addressing sensitive issues.

Working Conditions

Position located at 100 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012, Los Angeles County.

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
  • Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required. Failure to submit a Statement of Qualifications will disqualify candidates from the hiring process.

  2. Describe your working knowledge of Caltrans' current priorities.  How have you incorporated this understanding into your professional work.
