Summary: Compass Strategy Solutions, LLC, is seeking a highly qualified Background Investigator to conduct full-scope background investigations as a contract employee for a federal law enforcement agency in the Washington D.C. area. This contract position requires formal investigative training, a minimum of 2 years of specialized experience in background investigations, or similar investigative roles. Preferred candidates will bring demonstrated expertise in federal, military, or law enforcement background investigations, and possess a strong understanding of suitability criteria and investigative methodology.

Active or favorably adjudicated Public Trust clearance is required.

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Field Investigator will be assigned background investigation cases by a senior official of the law enforcement agency. These investigations require a high level of expertise in personnel security to evaluate an applicant’s suitability for employment.

Responsibilities include gathering background data, conducting subject interviews, and analyzing results from polygraph examinations, psychological evaluations, and medical screenings. The Field Investigator will assess what information or evidence is necessary to reach a determination on each case and develop an appropriate strategy to obtain it.

The Investigator will interview applicants as well as third-party sources, including spouses, employers, relatives, friends, acquaintances, and law enforcement officials. Following completion of each case, the Investigator shall prepare a formal report of findings, including a comprehensive analysis relevant to the subject's suitability.

The law enforcement agency will initiate investigations by notifying the Field Investigator and providing the subject’s Personal History Statement (PHS), subject interview report, and Authorization for Release of Information. The start date of the investigation shall be the date the case is assigned.

Each investigation will have a specified due date. If the Field Investigator does not receive all required documentation, they must notify the law enforcement agency within 24 hours of case receipt; however, the start date will remain unchanged. The Field Investigator is required to submit the final report in the format prescribed by the law enforcement entity.

This position involves local and regional travel, and infrequent multi-state travel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum education: High School Diploma or GED

Required Qualifications:
  • Completion of recognized training programs such as:
    • Federal Background Investigator Training Program (FBITP).
    • Local law enforcement training academy.
    • Reid School.
    • Certified investigative training courses.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in one or more of the following roles:
    • Background Investigator.
    • Criminal Investigator.
    • Security Specialist.
  • Minimum of 5 years of general experience in adjudicative and investigative support.
  • Favorably adjudicated full-scope background investigation , including FBI fingerprint check .
  • Proven ability to:
    • Conduct investigatory interviews with applicants and third parties.
    • Perform complex personnel security investigations.
    • Analyze results from polygraph, psychological, and medical evaluations.
    • Initiate credit and criminal checks.
    • Interpret and evaluate evidence to assess suitability for employment.
  • Strong working knowledge of local, state, and federal fraud statutes .
  • Ability to write formal analyses and investigative reports recommending case disposition.
  • High standards of integrity and confidentiality in handling sensitive information.
  • Effective liaison and customer service skills for communication with:
    • Insurance claim services.
    • Legal and medical professionals.
    • Government and regulatory agencies.
    • Vendors, policyholders, and other stakeholders.
